Alan Simpson's Windows XP Bible

Book by Alan Simpson. Wiley 1200 pages Paperback Published 2005-02-18. Description: Comprehensive in its treatment of Microsoft's latest and greatest operating system for the masses, Alan Simpson's Windows XP Bible has an answer to most "How do I..." questions that are likely to arise in the minds of Windows XP users, particularly those who aren't too familiar with recent versions of Windows. If you're going to buy a Windows XP reference book for your office, this would be a good choice. The author--the respected Alan Simpson, who's put out similarly comprehensive books before--must have incredible patience, because he manages to document almost every Windows procedure down to the last option and the final "OK" click. Most people won't need this level of handholding--almost everyone has gained knowledge of the basic Windows conventions by now--and perhaps this book could have been more compact (as it is, it's pretty hefty) or contained more obscure details without it. But don't accuse Simpson of neglecting details.

No one will read this book front to back. Most visits will begin with the table of contents (which is very detailed) or the index (which is even more so). A page-flip or two later, readers will have explanatory prose (which is clear and detailed, and almost always strictly businesslike without being off-putting) and a procedure or two with numbered steps. The procedures have a particularly good design when it comes to options--it's clear what happens if you make different choices in dialog boxes. Again, coverage is absolutely comprehensive, with detailed explanations and procedures extending even to Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and the new Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). --David Wall

Topics covered: Microsoft Windows XP (Professional Edition and Home Edition) for beginning and intermediate-level users of the operating system, with a few bones thrown in for more advanced users. Internet connectivity (standalone and shared), file management, administrative duties such as backing up files and uninstalling programs, local-area networks (LANs), and all other user-level aspects of Windows XP are covered. Chapters on portable computer issues and security are particularly nice.Description: * Jam-packed with more than 900 pages of comprehensive information on the Service Pack 2 update of Windows XP, this book covers the basics as well as more complex topics
* Features new coverage of Media Player 10, Movie Maker, and Service Pack 2, with sidebars, workarounds, solutions, and tips
* Focusing on Windows XP functionality, the book addresses the most popular Internet features, how to customize the work environment, maintain and tweak the system, and work with text, numbers, and graphics
* This is an ideal reference for users with limited Windows XP experience who need a comprehensive resource to make the most out of their hardware and operating systemDescription: * Jam-packed with more than 900 pages of comprehensive information on the Service Pack 2 update of Windows XP, this book covers the basics as well as more complex topics

      • Review:: 'Windows XP Bible The book arrived in perfect condition and just in time for me to use it for the new Windows program I had purchased.
      • Review:: 'Bible? I think not. I am not often moved to write a negative review. But paying $30 for a "comprehensive" 1200 page "Bible" on XP should prove more useful than a paperweight. Admittedly I have not used it a lot. But I have already lost confidence in its thoroughness. With hectic schedules, engineers don't have a lot of time to waste looking for answers in places that "might" have them. The very first topic I tried to explore was "RAID", a formidable topic that I had no doubt would be covered in an XP "bible". Out of 1200 pages, at least a few of them, or even an entire chapter, should cover the complexities of RAID on XP -- F6 driver installs, slipstreamed installs, benefits of mirrored v striped, hardware v software, tradeoffs, driver mechanics, ad infinitum. But when I looked up "RAID" in the index, I found but one (1) page out of the entire 1200 referring to the subject. And all that page did was give instructions on how to disable it. According to the author, RAID is a "server" issue, not XP, so the only XP-related knowledge you should need is how to turn it off, which is the recommended action for any and all XP users/administrators. WHAT? That is flat out ridiculous, misleading, and wrong. What other vital XP know-how is missing or incorrect because the author never found a use for it or is simply too naive to know what it means? Frankly, I just don't have time to give it a second chance. Off to the goodwill with it. This so-called "bible" is a poor example, lending to a questionable reputation for any other [B]ooks that may share the "Bible" name. Publishers ought to think twice about what they are willing to pass off as a comprehensive bible. Sincerely, Mike Jalkut
      • Review:: 'Hefty but not as inclusive as claimed Has as a lot of useful information but is not as all inclusive as they claim. Not one word about how to handle .dll problems, for example.
      • Review:: 'The best reference book ever! I love the Alan Simpson's Windows XP Bible! I never fail to find the answers to my questions in this book. Now, I don't have to keep a notebook of notes on how to do things on XP! I had a copy of the first edition, and this new edition covers so many other things that it is worth upgrading to.
      • Review:: 'Window's XP Bible This book is a great assistance to understanding the use and features of Window's XP.

Simpsons Comics Beach Blanket Bongo

Book by Matt Groening. Harper Paperbacks 128 pages Paperback Published 2007-04-01. Description:

Catch a wave of good humor and hang ten with the Simpsons in their newest, gnarliest comic collection Simpsons Comics Beach Blanket Bongo. Homer, Lenny and Carl think they will be living the sweet life when they all opt for Mr. Burns' early retirement plan, but their former boss' tropical island retirement community turns out to be for the birds . . . literally! Bart meets a reclusive B-movie director who announces that his collection of horror, science fiction, and Radioactive Man memorabilia is up for grabs, and every geek, nerd, and dweeb in town sets out on a quest to get their sweaty little hands on it. Krusty the Clown becomes Springfield's newest doctor, and its not long before he has the town in stitches while delivering big laughs. Principal Skinner takes you into the inner sanctum of Springfield Elementary to reveal untold tales of the Permanent Record File! Bart's arch nemesis, a now surgically altered Sideshow Bob, is released from prison, and Bart must figure out which newly arrived citizen is really Bob in disguise. Then, not to be outdone, Sideshow Bob's brother Cecil arrives on the scene with revenge on his mind and a grudge against . . . Lisa Simpson. So sit down by the seashore and slather on the right amount of SPF* to prevent you from being over done by the fun.

      • Review:: 'just like the series good book, just like the series. i wish they would make some of the story lines into episodes.
      • Review:: '"I very nearly singed my bone!"--Melvin Van Horne Another fun-packed issue of Simpsons Comics. This is the 15th issue I've bought and, with only a couple of exceptions, they are all as funny and entertaining as the television show. I've read them all multiple times. This issue is perfect for the Sideshow Mel fan because he is featured in a short that documents how and why he became Sideshow Mel and he is also the hero in another comic. Jimbo Jones fans will like the short about how he became a bully (he wasn't always one). Dr. Hibbert also has a short feature. Here's what this issue has to offer: "Simpson/Sideshow Sibling Smackdown": Cecil Terwilliger and Lisa have something in common--they can't escape from the shadows of their attention-grubbing older brothers. Can they find a rapport even as one is intent on destroying the other? "A Recipe for Disaster"--Marge needs a new dish for the church social pot luck and tries recipes written by "Springfieldian citizens of questionable character." "Homer's Run"--Bart becomes owner of a demanding falcoln ("I have to do everything for him. What a stupid bird") while Homer signs up for early retirement on the Hawaiian Island Garbagio--which looks (and smells) just like it sounds. "Secret Origin of Sideshow Mel"--The background story of how and why Melvin Van Horne became Krusty's sidekick (you won't believe what Mel's occupation was before he replaced Sideshow Bob). "Day of the Nerd"--Lisa finds out the truth about NASA's exploration of Mars. Meanwhile, the other geeks of Springfield compete in feats of nerdome to win the inheritance of the largest collector of TV/movie&comic book memorabilia. Interesting and unique but jumps around a lot. "Bummer Vacation"--Short about Bart's summer (his batting swing looks totally wrong) and then writing a report on it that Mrs. Krabbapal doesn't believe. "Laughter is the Worst Medicine"--Homer competes in a competitive eating contest, "The Gorge in the Gorge." As Krusty says, "Chewing is for losers! Once you swallow, it's the colon's problem." After eating the final hot dog, something goes horribly wrong. Meanwhile Krusty gets a real doctor's degree instead of an honorary one and sick people start lining up at his door. "Down Home Doctorin' Time with Doctor Julius Hibbert"--Short about Dr. Hibbert as a TV doctor forced to change the style of his show to get better ratings. Ends very abruptly. "The Permanent Record Room!"--Principal Skinner shares some stories (school stories, not war stories). (1) "Pranks But No Pranks"--Bart plays a joke on Groundskeeper Willie which has the janitor believing he's a superhero. (2) "And the Beatings Go On"--The origin of Jimbo Jones. No, he wasn't always a bully. (3) "Truant or False"--Lil' Homie gets hooked up with a young miscreant(who would grow up to become a prominent figure in Springfield). Homer thinks he's learned a valuable lesson from the breif time he spent with this rebelious kid, but perhaps it is the rebel who changes his ways. Sidenote: they wouldn't have had Noiseland Arcade if this comic was accurate. Homer's mother is in this comic and she left the family in 1969. "The Many Faces of Bob"--Sideshow Bob is released from prison but is hit by a Duff Beer truck on his way out and has to undergo plastic surgery. Bart and Lisa try to figure out who Bob could be posing as before he gets his revenge on Bart. "Homer vs. The Raccoon I & II"--I'm not sure why this was divided into two parts; it's just an 8-page short. Anyway, Homer tries to capture a raccoon that has been going through his trash.
