Kinds of Recall That Are Not Mere Recognition
Correctly naming a stimulus when it is presented is not recognition, although some authors use it in this sense (e.g., Binder, 1955; Binder & Feldman, 1960).
Examples that are really recall:
- musician properly naming G sharp when he hears it
- subject saying "Apple" when he is tachistoscopically presented the picture of an apple for 50 milliseconds.
This type of recognition is actually a kind of recall, because the subject is giving a learned response to a stimulus.
