Cat on the Scent (Mrs. Murphy Mysteries)

Book by Rita Mae Brown. Bantam 352 pages Mass Market Paperback Published 2000-04-04. Description: The animals in Crozet, Virginia, are a lot smarter than the humans, which will come as no surprise to the devoted fans of Rita Mae Brown's mysteries featuring Mrs. Murphy the tiger cat, the luxury-loving feline known as Pewter, and Tee Tucker, a curious corgi. In their seventh outing, they're leaps and bounds ahead of Harry Haristeen, the spunky postmistress they call Mom. Long before anyone else knows what's going on, they've figured out the connection between the shot fired at wealthy Sir Henry Vane-Tempest during the reenactment of a Civil War battle and a missing airplane hidden in Tally Urquhart's barn. They're better at finding evidence trampled underfoot at a crime scene than any detective is, and they know just whose lap to drop it in. While they might not understand exactly why county commissioner Archie Ingram is so exercised about Vane-Tempest's plans for development in Albemarle County--particularly when it promises to make him as wealthy as the husband of the woman he loves--they've sniffed out the sexual shenanigans that threaten to derail the private pact between Crozet's leading citizens. If Harry and her friends knew what the animals know, there'd be no mystery about it; there'd only be a charming and lighthearted story of chicanery in the new Old South with plenty of local color, the scent of lilacs wafting through every page, and the deft prose of a writer on top of her game. But then, there'd be no raison d'etre for the liveliest scene in the book, wherein Mrs. Murphy, Pewter, and Tee take a turbo-charged Porsche for a breakneck ride through Virginia's verdant hills and dales. By the end of the book, the only mystery is whether Harry and Fair, her favorite ex-husband, will manage to get back together again in the next installment--or the one after that--of this popular series. --Jane AdamsDescription: It takes a cat to write the purr-fect mystery.

Things have been pretty exciting lately in Crozet, Virginia—a little too exciting if you ask resident feline investigator Mrs. Murphy. Just as the town starts to buzz over its Civil War reenactment, a popular local man disappears. No one's seen Tommy Van Allen's single-engine plane, either—except for Mrs. Murphy, who spotted it during a foggy evening's mousing.

Even Mrs. Murphy's favorite human, postmistress Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen, can sense that something is amiss. But things really take an ugly turn when the town reenacts the battle of Oak Ridge—and a participant ends up with three very real bullets in his back. While the clever tiger cat and her friends sift through clues that just don't fit together, more than a few locals fear that the scandal will force well-hidden town secrets into the harsh light of day. And when Mrs. Murphy's relentless tracking places loved ones in danger, it takes more than a canny kitty and her team of animal sleuths to set things right again....Description:

Things have been pretty exciting lately in Crozet, Virginia—a little too exciting if you ask resident feline investigator Mrs. Murphy. Just as the town starts to buzz over its Civil War reenactment, a popular local man disappears. No one’s seen Tommy Van Allen’s single-engine plane, either—except for Mrs. Murphy, who spotted it during a foggy evening’s mousing.

Even Mrs. Murphy’s favorite human, postmistress Mary Minor “Harry” Haristeen, can sense that something is amiss. But things really take an ugly turn when the town reenacts the battle of Oak Ridge—and a participant ends up with three very real bullets in his back. While the clever tiger cat and her friends sift through clues that just don’t fit together, more than a few locals fear that the scandal will force well-hidden town secrets into the harsh light of day. And when Mrs. Murphy’s relentless tracking places loved ones in danger, it takes more than a canny kitty and her team of animal sleuths to set things right again.

“Leave it to a cat to grasp the essence of the cozy mystery: namely, murder among friends.”
THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW

“Told with spunk and plenty of whimsy, this is another delightful entry in a very popular series.”

      • Review:: 'Love all the Sneaky Pie Brown books I love to read these books when I am in the mood for something light and fun...there is always a mystery but I love all the main characters and animals...long live Mrs. Murphy, Tee Tucker and Pewter!
      • Review:: 'Driving is Not Just For Humans Anymore! In the 7th book in the Mrs. Murphy and Tucker mystery series, the citizens of Crozet, Virginia are up in arms about water. It seems that the water supply in the county is in jeopardy, and the county commission feels that the reservoir plan that it currently has is outdated. When one of the members goes missing, and his plane is found hidden, there is a general suspicion that something terrible must have happened to him. But these thoughts are put aside as the town prepares for their Civil War reenactment of the battle of Oak Ridge. Most of the town participates...either in the battle reenactment itself, or being a spectator of it. During the battle, a wealthy member of the town is shot and wounded, and it becomes clear that it was no accident. And when the missing town commissioner is found dead, a whole lot of questions begin to arise about the commissioners and their recent activities. Mary Minor Haristeen (aka Harry) noses around like usual, and with the help of her irrepressible animals, finds that several members of the town have big secrets and big profits in mind. I love this charming series! For some, the dialogue between the animals might be a bit confusing, but I feel that the antics and conversations of the animals only add to the fun. In this installment, Mrs. Murphy (a tiger cat), Tee Tucker (a Welsh corgi), and Pewter (a fat gray cat) not only find several huge clues to the mystery, but also learn how to drive a Porsche! There are also some good tidbits about Harry's family, and the scandal that rocked Crozet many years before. I love this town, the lively cast of characters, and the rich setting. I cannot wait to pick up the next book, and visit them all again soon! The first book in the series is called "Wish You Were Here". Enjoy!
      • Review:: 'Unfinished? This particular entry in the series seemed unfinished to me. There wasn't much input from the horses (not that they're ever the focus), and Harry's evolving relationship with her ex-husband had no mention here. Maybe there was pressure from Ms. Brown's publisher to get it done, damn the plot. Still, is was an enjoyable read, just not up to the standard I'm used to in the series. Oh, and I really miss Wendy Wray's brilliant illustrations!
      • Review:: 'The one where the animals figure it out. The animals figure this one out, but not the humans, when all is said and done. It's a pretty good story, although quite easy to figure out as you read. But that's not why I read a Rita Mae Brown book. I read for the sheer coziness of the stories, as well as the wonderful characters that she has created (both humans and animals, of course). I also enjoy the settings behind each story. The area of Crozet, Virginia must be very beautiful, and Ms. Brown portrays it well. I also like the ideas behind each story. This one is created around a Civil War reenactment. I have always been fascinaed with the passionate players that keep this terrible war alive. The story starts with a prominent citizen being shot in the reenactment. How can that be, Harry wonders? They're supposed to be playing and not using live rounds. Anyway, that is enough to get Mrs. Murphy, Pewter and Tucker going. They just have to figure it out, while making sure they protect their human at the same time. Lots of fun.
      • Review:: 'Welcome Back To Crozet! I have read all of Rita's & Sneaky Pie Brown's Mrs. Murphy tales (or is that tails(?)) "Cat on the Scent" was terrific! Unlike the others I have read, there are moments of great sadness among Harry's friends that makes them even more three-dimensional. I enjoyed this read very much. Thank you Rita and Sneaky!

Signed, Mata Hari- A Novel

Book by Yannick Murphy. Little, Brown and Company 288 pages Hardcover Published 2007-11-14. Description: In the cold October of 1917 Margaretha Zelle, better known as Mata Hari, sits in a prison cell in Paris awaiting trial on charges of espionage. The penalty is death by firing squad. As she waits, burdened by a secret guilt, Mata Hari tells stories, Scheherazade-like, to buy back her life from her interrogators.
From a bleak childhood in the Netherlands, through a loveless marriage to a Dutch naval officer, Margaretha is transported to the forbidden sensual pleasures of Indonesia. In the chill of her prison cell she spins tales of rosewater baths, native lovers, and Javanese jungles, evoking the magical world that sustained her even as her family crumbled. And then, in flight from her husband, Margaretha reinvents herself: she becomes an artist's model, circus rider, and finally the temple dancer Mata Hari, dressed in veils, admired by Diaghilev, performing for the crowned heads of Europe. Through all her transformations, her life's fatal questions---was she a traitor, and if so, why?---burns ever brighter.
      • Review:: 'A fascinating novel about a woman who has become an icon. I really enjoyed this imagined life of the famous spy Mata Hari; her life in Java is beautifully realized, and even the bleakness of her imprisonment and execution are well rendered. [EyeWitnesstoHistory]Create?.com has a chilling report of her execution, written by an eyewitness, Henry Wales. A few lines from his dispatch: "Never once had the iron will of the beautiful woman failed her. Father Arbaux, accompanied by two sisters of charity, Captain Bouchardon, and Maitre Clunet, her lawyer, entered her cell, where she was still sleeping - a calm, untroubled sleep, it was remarked by the turnkeys and trusties. The sisters gently shook her. She arose and was told that her hour had come. 'May I write two letters?' was all she asked. Consent was given immediately by Captain Bouchardon, and pen, ink, paper, and envelopes were given to her. She seated herself at the edge of the bed and wrote the letters with feverish haste. She handed them over to the custody of her lawyer. Then she drew on her stockings, black, silken, filmy things, grotesque in the circumstances. She placed her high-heeled slippers on her feet and tied the silken ribbons over her insteps. She arose and took the long black velvet cloak, edged around the bottom with fur and with a huge square fur collar hanging down the back, from a hook over the head of her bed. She placed this cloak over the heavy silk kimono which she had been wearing over her nightdress. Her wealth of black hair was still coiled about her head in braids. She put on a large, flapping black felt hat with a black silk ribbon and bow. Slowly and indifferently, it seemed, she pulled on a pair of black kid gloves. Then she said calmly: 'I am ready.'" ***** As Father Arbaux spoke with the condemned woman, a French officer approached, carrying a white cloth. 'The blindfold,' he whispered to the nuns who stood there and handed it to them. 'Must I wear that?' asked Mata Hari, turning to her lawyer, as her eyes glimpsed the blindfold. Maitre Clunet turned interrogatively to the French officer. 'If Madame prefers not, it makes no difference,' replied the officer, hurriedly turning away. . Mata Hari was not bound and she was not blindfolded. She stood gazing steadfastly at her executioners, when the priest, the nuns, and her lawyer stepped away from her.
      • Review:: 'Beautifully written novel about a female spy Reviewed by Olivera Baumgartner-Jackson for Reader Views (12/07) Mata Hari was one of the most well-known exotic dancers of all times, yet her true fame came after the accusations that she was spying for Germans during the First World War. A fascinating person in real life, she takes on added dimensions in the beautifully written novel "Signed, Mata Hari" by Yannick Murphy. This exquisite novel portrays Mata Hari as a daughter, a lover, a wife, a friend, a mother and more, but first and foremost as a woman. The novel's setting is a jail in Paris, France; that's where Mata Hari awaits her trial. Charge: spying. Penalty: death by a firing squad, if found guilty. While in prison, Mata Hari tells stories and writes letters to her estranged daughter, Non. It is through those stories, letters and conversations with a nun, Sister Leonide, that we get acquainted with Mata Hari, whose real name was Margaretha Zelle. From the lean years of her youth and the exotic, if not exactly happy years as a young wife of a Dutch naval officer, living in Java - and to her years as a famous performer with invented and wondrously embroidered past, associating with many men from different sides, Mata Hari is revealed as an intricately complex personality, perennially searching for happiness and fulfillment. The novel does not provide an answer to the oftentimes asked question about her guilt, but it reveals a secret that Mata Hari carried hidden for many years and which could have sparked some of the events that sent her on the downwards spiral that ended with her execution. I read "Signed, Mata Hari" in one sitting. I picked it up to relax and escape for a couple of minutes, but there was no way to put it down. Ms. Murphy created a series of very complex characters in a setting that immediately draw me in. Her writing is magical - once she draws you within, the tangled web keeps you safely inside. Engaging story, lush descriptions, emotionally charged content - overall a fantastic read.
      • Review:: 'Fascinating story line I am enjoying the book, Signed Mata Hari. I find the character descriptions to be so in-depth and fascinating, that its hard to put the book down. Always an enjoyable read, Yannick Murphy shares a different side to her characters, whether they be fiction or nonfiction. The reader joins the writer on an adventure back and forth through time and has a new journey in each chapter.
      • Review:: 'Life in India brought alive on the pages Reviewed by Ginger [McBride]Create? Margaretha learned the skill of disconnecting at an early age; a skill that would serve her well in her short, difficult life. After her fourteenth birthday, her father left her and her mother. Not long after, her mother died. Margaretha was sent to live with her godfather, an arrangement that didn't last long because he could not support her. He quickly sent her to live and teach at a school. There Margaretha learned little about teaching and children, but much pleasing about men. At seventeen, she was sent to live with her uncle, ending the first of her many love affairs. Through a newspaper advertisement, Margaretha found what she hoped would be the answer to her dreary life. Captain Rudolph [MacLeod]Create?, an Indies Army captain, was seeking a wife. Soon Margaretha discovered that [MacLeod]Create? was not the perfect husband. He often came home after heavily drinking and sleeping with other women, only to force himself on his wife. And despite his continued adulterous behavior, was a jealous and controlling when others showed interest in her. Soon after her son was born, Captain [MacLeod]Create? was sent back to Indonesia, where he continued with his philandering ways. Margaretha changes her name to Mata Hari, Javaneyse for "sunrise." Since her husband continues to have many women, when both of their children are poisoned, killing one, Margaretha blames him. They move to a new area, but the situation does not improve. After years of unhappiness, infidelity and fighting, Mata Hari, her husband and child move in with his sister. Things continue to go down hill and eventually, Captain [MacLeod]Create? leaves his sister's house with his daughter and Mata Hari is left to fend for herself. This begins her decent into dating numerous men and eventually leads to her arrest. Written from different perspectives and time frames, Signed Mata Hari, is a book of intrigue, deception and mystery that will keep you guessing and captivated. I found it sort of hard to follow sometimes and was slightly clueless about some of the terms used. Armchair Interview says: A young woman's struggles of survival.
      • Review:: 'All Things Girl Reviews: Signed, Mata Hari It's only a short time before her execution and we are in her prison cell. We are in Paris and the year is 1917. We are with Margaretha Zelle, aka, Mata Hari. In this richly woven tale, Yannik Murphy mixes the facts of Mata Hari's life with nuggets of fiction to share a richly woven tale alternating between Mata Hari in prison, telling stories to her captors to buy back her life within the story of her life. Growing up mostly alone and abandoned and then finding herself in a loveless marriage, she shows that she is a survivor. Margaretha finds her comfort during her time in Java, but also suffers her greatest loss. She then reinvents herself and becomes the dancer, Mata Hari, dressing in veils and being admired by the elite of Europe. Was Mata Hari a spy or was she simply a delusional woman longing for attention? I devoured Signed, Mata Hari. I was left wanting to know even more...wondering where the facts ended and the fiction began. The writing was authentic and it seemed as if I were reading an autobiography. It's a book that will stay on my bookshelf to share with friends, and for the occasional re-read.
