From Claude the Colporteur, by Anne Manning, 1866, published by "Robert Carter & Brothers, No. 530 Broadway, New York"
- The story: A colporteur with a thorn in his foot travelling to a city meets an old woman who brings him home to take the thorn out of his foot. They are getting ready for a Saints day festival the next day, and are excited about singing hymns to their patron saint, the "miracle-play" for Virgin Mary. He doesn't adore the Virgin Mary, eventhough his hosts do. He reads from one of his books, and amazes them with they discover he is reading from the Bible.
- Children, sick persons, and irrational animals, must take what is given them, and be thankful. - Page 7
- Why, (your bag) 'tis as heavy as lead? You must be carrying an iron weight slung round your neck for a penance?
- Eyed the new-comer (the colporteur) from head to foot. There was something foreign and picturesque in his simple dress; he was of light yet vigorous make, and appeared about eight and twenty years of age.
- (Asked by the son) "Do you happen now," pursued Hans, "to have a copy of 'The Terrible and Unparalleled History of the Man-Wolf, who lived in the Forest of Bondy, and devoured many Women and Children?'" - "No."
Eventually Claude marries Lisa. 18 months after marriage, he started again to do his colportage.
- When Lisa would persuade him to postpone his next journey a little longer, he would answer her with "There is so much to do! The fields are white unto harvest, and I am the only reaper!"

- In the summer of 1833 Claude encountered his old friend and fellow-prisoner Pierrot, now a regularly paid and licensed colporteur, who told ihm that about eight thousand copies of the Scriptures had, up to that time, been distributed in France; through the agency of a hundred and fifty colporeurs. In 1837, a hundred applicants for the same office presented themselves out of a very small district; forty-four of them were selected, and in four months they sold forty-five thousand copies of the Bible. Within fifteen years the sale had considerably exceeded one million.
- Note: Each was selling selling 250 copies of the Bible each month.

According to Annual report of the American Bible Society:
- The most active church in Uruguay in the circulation of the Bible is the Adventist. There are very few homes that have not been visited by a colporteur.

- One of our workers in Czechoslovakia wrote: "The year 1926 is like 1415, when John Huss was burned at the stake. A raging mob got together, stirred by the priest, and got after one of our colporteurs. Tehy attacked the house where he was, and took books and other things belonging to him valued at $700. They intended to kill him, and did beat him so badly that he is still in bed. All well-dressed strangers that came near the house were assaulted, as they thought they were Adventists coming to help this brother. Our field secretary dressed himself up as a tramp in the shabbiest clothes. By this means he was able to come to the assistance of our brother, and to stay with him. This canvasser sent word that just as asoon as he got out of bed, he would start work again."
