Definition of Habit

Habit is the persistent state of the subject that is memory, and memory research has as its battlefront habit and the variables which affect it over the retention interval. (fundamental premise)

Definition of memory and forgetting: Memory is the habit states of a subject that give the capability for correct occurrences of a criterion response. There is an initial acquisition session in which the subject makes a discriminative response to a stimulus, followed by a period of time called the "retention interval" when the criterion response does not occur. After the interval there is a retention test in which the subject is asked to recall the criterion response in its original form when a stimulus is presented or, in the case of recognition, to indicate with an identification response whether he has experienced the stimulus or the criterion response before.

Chains and networks of covert events, as in a problem-solving situation, may intervene between the stimulus and occurrence of the criterion response and require activation of several habit states. Moreover, recall and recognition may be based on different habit states.

"Memory Trace" is another term for habit.
