"Then the schools would improve because AMERICAN students would get better education because the schools wouldn't be taking so much time and money to cater to anchor babies by teaching them English as a second language."
I am a teacher. I find this comment very offensive. Hispanic students are not the only ones who are having problems in school. Students of every color, including white, are not doing so great.
Did you know that in Europe, many students learn 2-3 languages in elementary. Yet, people like you have a heart attack about Bilingual Education. American students should not only be learning English, but a second and even a third language.
The only problem with this comparison is this:
- Foreign public schools require you to be fluent in the official language of the country, and all the primary subjects are taught in that official language. In the U.S. the public schools are trying to teach kids in the same class in two different languages, resulting in a split curriculum.
- The 2-3 extra languages that kids might learn in a foreign school are often languages that are in use in their neighborhood
- The extra languages are just that: extra. They do not try to learn primary subjects in the other languages
